Simply go up one direction, turn around and come back beside the previous cut.
The roller I use is a big league lawn stripe kit. As it rolls over the grass, it makes the blades lay over. When sun hits it, you’ll get a dark/light color.
There are many DIY options out there for less, but I believe this one stripes the best.

Using a string trimmer around flower beds will keep your edging clean and prevent your grass from growing back into your beds.
