10 reasons to choose for rail freight - interview with kristian Schmidt (European Comission DG Move)

Earlier this year, Rail Cargo Information Netherlands launched the brochure Ten Reasons to Choose Rail Freight at the Transport Logistic fair in Munich. It sets out why rail is the smart choice: from sustainability and safety to resilience and efficiency.

Asked which reasons he found most persuasive, Kristian Schmidt (DG MOVE) highlighted two. First, rail helps avoid road congestion while offering clear sustainability benefits: greater energy efficiency, improved road safety, and less dependence on scarce truck drivers. For operators, that means moving more goods over longer distances without road restrictions.
Second, he pointed to investment. After decades of underfunding, Europe is finally upgrading rail infrastructure and digital systems. Despite current challenges, these investments mark a turning point — positioning rail freight as the long-term smart choice: more efficient, punctual and reliable.
