One difference I've noticed after moving to the Netherlands is that in the US, allowing your cat to go outside is considered to be one of the worst things you can do to your cat. In the Netherlands, it's almost the opposite where people will be confused if you don't let your cat outside. So we started letting our cat out when we moved him to the Netherlands from the US.

That said, research shows that letting your cat out could be really bad for birds. We started letting our cat out before we knew about this, and there's no way we could keep him in anymore. But we don't let him out at night when it's supposedly at its worst.
