Tropical Storm Omar Becomes the Earliest O Named Storm on Record

Tropical Storm Omar formed today despite high wind shear, and has become the 15th named storm of the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Omar is also the earliest O named storm on record for an hurricane season in the Atlantic basin, beating out Ophelia of 2005. Despite this notoriety, Omar is not a significant threat to land as the storm is moving away from the United States, and is expected to pass well north of Bermuda as a weakening storm as a combination of high wind shear and cooler sea surface temperatures take their toll on the system, likely degenerating Omar into a remnant low in the next 2 days. Interest in Bermuda, Atlantic Canada and the East Coast of the United States should still keep an eye on Omar for shipping routes, as well as the potential for rougher surf and rip currents during the next few days.
