Marion Island Expedition 2020

Marion Island, one of the two Prince Edward Islands (Marion Island and Prince Edward Island) in the subantarctic Indian Ocean, lies at 46°S and 37°E, roughly 2160 km southeast of Cape Town, South Africa.

The Prince Edward Islands form part of South Africa's Western Cape Province. Marion is one of the 3 stations under the South African National Antarctic Programme. These stations are used for Biological/Environmental research.

The helicopters play a big part in this programme as these stations are so remote and inaccessible. During these expeditions cargo is slung from the ship externally underneath the helicopter to the stations. Flying can be very challenging due to strong winds and unpredictable weather conditions that change quickly.
