9 Surprising Ways People FAIL the Bar Exam

9 Surprising Ways People FAIL the Bar Exam

1. Taking sleep medication the night before the bar exam

If you are human, you will likely experience some form of stress and test anxiety the night before the bar exam. While it might be difficult to fall asleep the night before your big day, you should refrain from taking any nonprescription medication (e.g., Nyquil, Benadryl, etc.) to help you catch some shuteye. Often, these medications can leave you feeling groggy, disoriented, and/or confused when you wake up – all of which, you do not want to experience while trying to take the bar exam!

2. Drinking excessive amounts of energy drinks the morning of the bar exam

Similarly, if you fail to get a good night sleep before the bar exam, do not try to compensate by drinking excessive amounts of caffeine. A little coffee in the morning should not hurt, but excessive amounts of caffeine can make you feel jittery, panicky, and sick to your stomach – all of which, you do not want to experience while trying to take the bar exam!

3. Getting sick before the bar exam

You do not want to take the bar exam with a cold or flu. In the weeks leading up to the bar exam, try to take as many reasonable precautions as you can to prevent illness. Avoid eating food that might be contaminated, stay away from sick people, wash your hands frequently, make sure that you eat a balanced diet, etc.

4. Changing your bar prep strategy based on the word of others who are also in bar prep

Do not deviate from your bar exam plans, strategies, or techniques based on the words of anyone who is not a bar exam expert. No one knows you better than you! There is never going to be a “one-size-fits-all” approach to passing the bar exam. There will always be subtleties and nuances that will be better for some individuals and worse for others. Have confidence in yourself to recognize what will be best for you and your situation.

5. Violating bar exam test-day policies

Do not violate your jurisdiction’s test-day policies. Before you sit for the bar exam on exam day, you need to read your jurisdiction’s test day rules and policies. Make sure that you know what items are prohibited from the testing room, and what conduct is prohibited during the exam. When the proctors tell you to stop writing, STOP writing!

6. Failing to register your laptop properly

Don’t forget to register your laptop! This usually must be done 6-8 weeks before the bar exam. If you are used to typing bar exam essays, it will be a huge disadvantage to have to handwrite them on the bar exam. Make sure that you read your jurisdiction’s rules on laptop registration and compete the registration properly and punctually.

7. Laptop meltdowns

Also, make sure that your laptop works properly! If you have a 10-year old laptop that takes an hour to boot up every time your turn it on, you may want to borrow a laptop from a friend/family member or rent a brand new one from a reputable source. While in some cases it may be unavoidable, having a laptop crash during the bar exam can be disastrous.

8. Forgetting to bring your bar exam admission ticket

Before you sit for the bar exam, you need to make an exam day checklist that you can run through each morning of the exam to make sure that you have everything you need before you leave for the testing center. Most importantly, do not forget your bar exam admission ticket – they will likely not let you in without it!

9. Inability to find the testing center

Before you sit for the bar exam on exam day, you need to physically visit your testing center. Look around and familiarize yourself with the building. Make sure that you know where to park, how long it takes to get to the testing center, and how to enter the building. You do not want to be lost and scrambling to find the testing center or the entrance to the building the morning of the bar exam!
