How much do I have to study to pass the bar exam?

Most bar prep companies, instructors, and tutors generally recommend that students spend 500-600 hours preparing for the bar exam. This number is derived from the idea that students should treat bar prep like a full-time job for 8-10 weeks (which is not necessarily bad advice).

However, we believe that students should not focus on the amount of time spent preparing for the bar exam. Instead, we believe that students should focus on the amount of practice questions completed and reviewed in preparation for the bar exam.

From our experience, there is much stronger correlation to bar pass rates from the amount of practice questions completed and reviewed than the amount of overall hours spent in general preparation.  

Thus, if you want a metric to gauge the amount of work it takes to pass the bar exam, we recommend focusing on the amount of practice questions completed and reviewed, rather than the overall amount of time spent. As a general guideline, we recommend that students complete and review a minimum of 2,000 high quality practice MBE questions and 5 practice essays from each essay subject before sitting for the bar exam.
