China hopes they will be dealing with 'Obama 2.0'

ASPI Director of Defence and National Security Michael Shoebridge says if Joe Biden becomes President of the United States, China hopes they will be dealing with Obama 2.0, to reset the relationship between Washington and Beijing.

"They're going to be out of luck in a lot of ways because the makeup of the Senate and the House of Representatives is not going to make it easy for Biden to do that even if he wanted to because Trump has reset the American conversation on China," he said.

"That will outlast him whenever he leaves the White House."

Mr Shoebridge said any unfreezing of bilateral relations was likely a false promise and anyone who thought there would be a collective "singing of Kumbaya between Beijing and Washington" did not understand the Chinese.

"China talks a great game on climate change and is still the world's largest emitter of carbon and will be for some time. So they're playing a double bluff there," he said.

"And on the coronavirus, anyone who thinks the Chinese are open on how this all happened and therefore wants to be a constructive part of the solution is equally mistaken, so no, I'm not dewy-eyed at all."
