US election was always going to be tight because America is so divided

Fox News Radio White House Correspondent John Decker says the US presidential race was always going to be a tight election because of how divided the country has become.

"This race was always going to be tight. It was going to be tight because you have a country that is so divided," he said.

"It wasn't a repudiation of President Trump by any stretch of the imagination when you look at the popular vote totals - it's almost right in half.

"You wonder if... Joe Biden is the next president, what becomes of the Trump movement? What becomes of those followers of the president? Who do they follow for the next four years until the next election cycle?

"It's very clear America likes divided government."

Mr Decker said a winner could be known as early as the end of the week but would not necessarily be definitive as litigation battles were expected to continue for some time.

"[Joe Biden] is already planning for the transition. He's already got a website set up and is probably already talking to prospective cabinet members," he said.
