CMS Signals Additional Nursing Home Deregulation May Be Ahead

CMS officials say the agency is actively exploring new ways to reduce administrative burden for long-term care providers while maintaining quality and safety expectations. During a recent stakeholder webinar, CMS leadership discussed ongoing efforts to streamline regulations, audits, survey processes, and reporting requirements based on industry feedback. Provider organizations have long argued that excessive administrative demands divert time and resources away from resident care. CMS has already taken steps such as modifying health inspection scoring and scaling back portions of the staffing mandate. Agency leaders emphasized that reducing duplicative paperwork and operational complexity could help facilities focus more directly on resident outcomes and safety.
