Nursing Home News of the Week (December 15, 2025)
Welcome to Qsource's Nursing Home News of the Week, your trusted source for timely, relevant updates impacting long-term care. Each week, we break down the top headlines affecting nursing homes, including regulatory changes, workforce challenges, policy developments, and quality improvement insights. Designed for busy professionals, our news reports help nursing home staff stay informed, prepared, and empowered to deliver high-quality care.
Medicaid Standards Adjusted for 2026
CMS has finalized updated Medicaid income and resource standards for 2026, following the annual Social Security COLA and Consumer Price Index adjustments. The individual SSI benefit will increase by 3.2% to $994/month, while couples will receive $1,491. However, the asset/resource limits for Medicaid eligibility remain unchanged at $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples. The monthly income cap for long-term care Medicaid eligibility will rise to $2,982. Notably, spousal impoverishment protections will also adjust, raising the community spouse income allowance to a maximum of $4,066.50/month and the asset allowance to $154,140.
CMS Pauses Nursing Home Revalidation Due to PECOS Issues
In response to ongoing technical issues with the PECOS system, CMS has indefinitely postponed the revalidation requirement for Medicare-certified nursing homes. While this move offers temporary relief, facilities already in the process must still meet their deadlines. CMS clarified that this is a delay, not a cancellation, and providers should continue preparing to meet Medicare enrollment obligations. The pause aligns with CMS’s increased focus on transparency and system stability under the Biden administration's oversight initiatives.
AI Tools Gaining Ground in Skilled Nursing
Artificial intelligence is seeing rapid adoption in skilled nursing settings as operators seek better compliance and financial predictability. Organizations like Ignite Medical Resorts and ArchCare are deploying AI to assist with PDPM reimbursement forecasting, identify documentation gaps before MDS submissions, and anticipate staffing needs. These tools aim to reduce costly errors, enhance operational efficiency, and support accurate regulatory reporting, all while easing the administrative burden on clinical and compliance staff.
