"Better Off Dead" (1985) is a dark teen comedy that follows high school student Lane Meyer (John Cusack) as he spirals into despair after his girlfriend, Beth Truss (Amanda Wyss), breaks up with him for the arrogant ski team captain, Roy Stalin (Aaron Dozier). Heartbroken, Lane makes several hilariously failed suicide attempts, all while dealing with his eccentric family, including his clueless mother, Jenny Meyer (Kim Darby), his strict but bewildered father, Al Meyer (David Ogden Stiers), and his silent genius younger brother, Badger Meyer (Scooter Stevens). Meanwhile, his best friend, Charles De Mar (Curtis Armstrong), offers dubious advice, and a persistent paperboy, Johnny Gasparini (Demian Slade), relentlessly chases him, demanding "two dollars" for an unpaid debt. Amidst the chaos, Lane’s attempts to win Beth back lead to a challenge to ski the treacherous K12 slope, despite his initial lack of skill.

As Lane struggles with his heartbreak, he befriends Monique Junot (Diane Franklin), a French exchange student staying with his obnoxious neighbors, Mrs. Smith (Laura Waterbury) and her socially inept son, Ricky Smith (Dan Schneider). Monique, tired of Ricky’s unwanted attention, helps Lane rebuild his confidence, teaching him how to ski and fix up his 1967 Camaro. Through her encouragement, Lane realizes his own self-worth, leading him to defeat Roy in a dramatic ski race down the K12 and ultimately reject Beth when she tries to reconcile. The film ends with Lane and Monique driving off together, symbolizing a fresh start. "Better Off Dead" blends surreal humor, absurdist gags, and genuine heart, making it a cult favorite among '80s teen comedies.
