DIY Ballet Barre

Hey Dancers and Dance Fans!

So, I’ve been working on creating my own personal dance studio space in my garage. I found mirrors for free on Craigslist, but ballet barres? Um, NO.

What I DID find, however, was a blueprint for creating your own ballet barre out of PVC pipe – that thick plastic stuff. Total cost? Around $35. I thought to myself, “Yeah, I think I can pull that off!” So, I went for it.

As you’ll see in the video, some hardware stores will not pre-cut the PVC pipe for you, others will. We managed to sweet-talk one of Lowe’s workers into doing 2 cuts just so we could get the pipe into our car. However, you’ll still need to make several more cuts, so a hack-saw will be necessary. This means you’ll also want to have a vise, or at the very least, a strong friend to hold the pipe in place while you cut it.

Here are all the ingredients you’ll need to make your barre:

- Two (2) 10’ PVC pipe in white, black or grey (your preference) – 1.5” OUTER DIAMETER (inner diameter is 1.25”)
- Six (6) elbow connectors (90 degrees y’all, not 45 degrees, and be sure they are the “SLIP” kind, NOT the “THREAD” kind!!) – 2” OUTER DIAMETER
- Four (4) T-connectors (again, NOT the “THREAD” kind)– 1.5” OUTER DIAMETER

Just be sure you test out your elbow and T-connectors on the long pieces of PVC pipe to make sure they all fit – that is your safest bet!

Here are the lengths you will need to cut your two (2) 10’ PVC pipes:

- Six (6) pieces 10” long each
- Two (2) pieces 26” long each

Technically, you could create a longer barre, but I would not recommend using PVC pipe for anything longer than the model described above – not strong enough. If you want to go longer, go with steel pipe or something stronger than plastic.
