Muslims Celebrate Ramadan in Xi'an / Ramadan 2019 / Islam in China

It is May 2019, and it is the holy month of Ramadan for over a billion Muslims in the world. China is home to millions of Muslims, and the ancient city of Xi'an is famous for its Muslim Quarter, which is home to the oldest mosque in China. My husband and I went to one of the many mosques in the area to break our fast and attend the sunset prayer (maghrib). Unfortunately, many mosques here strictly separate men and women, and the women's prayer spaces are often outside of the actual mosques. I was shocked when we women had our dinner in a space that is usually used as a bathroom! Nonetheless, we had a nice evening, and I had a chance to observe the special Taraweh prayer in four different mosques!
