1. The album was intended as a tribute to Syd Barrett, one of the band's original members, who had left the band due to mental health issues. The opening track, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," was specifically written for Barrett.
2. The famous "wind" sound at the beginning of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was created by blowing through a microphone into a Leslie speaker.
3. The album's closing track "Eclipse" contains a reference to the band's previous album "The Dark Side of the Moon" with the lyric "everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon."
