Peckham is a district in south-east London 3.5 miles from Charing Cross. The name "Peckham" refers to the village of the 'River Peck' which was a small stream running through the district up until 1823. The village had gardens and orchards growing melons, figs and grapes for the nearby markets in central London.

The 'M.Manze Eel and Pie House' is London's oldest pie and mash shop. They use the same recipes today since they opened for business in 1902.

The CLF Art Cafe now represents the area's leading centre for the creative arts. It's located inside multiple-use Block A of the Bussey Building and is a hub for music, art, film, dance, theatre and workshops.

'Bold Tendencies' is a creative arts organisation with long-running exhibits that has occupied the top four disused floors of the municipal car park since 2007. It's partnered up with Frank's well known Cafe on the rooftop and the Multi-Story Orchestra on lower floors. The building offers extraordinary panoramic views over London in the spring and summer months. It's worth taking a look.

Peckham is served well by overground train services and has two train stations - Peckham Rye and Queens Road. Peckham was part of the first experimental route for the creation of our London bus stops and has a bus garage with six night buses linking it directly to central London.

Peckham Library is a community building which was opened in 2000. It won the Stirling Architecture Prize for its striking features and looks like an inverted capital letter 'L'.

Peckham covers a large area of South London and has a strong sense of identity made up of a traditional working class community. It's one of the most ethnically diverse areas of the UK and Rye Lane is one of the most frequented shopping areas in South London. There's been a steady gentrification of some of the areas to the south of Peckham which has seen an influx of cafés, wine bars, niche shops and artists' studios.

Towards the late 70's, Peckham became known as one of the most deprived residential areas in Western Europe. High unemployment and a lack of economic opportunity led to urban decay. As a result, the area was subjected to a regeneration programme in the late 1990s which cost nearly £300 million.

PeckhamPlex is London's most successful independent cinema. Its got this charming 80's feel to it and you can watch any film, blockbuster or otherwise, for just £5.
