Rotherhithe is a residential district in the south east London Borough of Southwark.

Like Greenwich, Rotherhithe sits inside the south bank peninsula of the River Thames and borders both Bermondsey and Deptford.

The latest landmark to appear in Canada Water is a £14million library and cultural centre designed by Piers Gough.

The old port district known as 'Redriff' is now called Rotherhithe which means ‘sailor's haven’. Historically, it came under the county of Surrey and has a long history as a port from Elizabethan times up until the 1970s so some may still refer to it as the Surrey Docks.

Canada Water is the only body of fresh water in the London Docklands and was mainly used by ships from Canada. Half of it was previously filled in so they could build the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre on top of it. The shopping centre become so iconic that both the area and train station have had their names adjusted to Surrey Quays to marry up.

Cafe East is probably the most popular restaurant in the district. So much so, that they've had to stop reservations altogether. They serve Vietnamese cuisine in a bustling, canteen-style environment without alcohol.

This red bridge was moved here from Deptford Creek in 1959 and would open for large ships using nothing but counterweights. It has a twin a bit further up the river.

This guy, James Walker, worked on the design and construction of Greenland Dock, the largest dock on the south bank.

Despite heavy upmarket redevelopment along the riverside in the 1980s, Rotherhithe retains a lot of its 1696 maritime character of manmade canal networks and active docks full of ships.

This district has three train stations, Rotherhithe, Surrey Quays and Canada Water and they serve as an important transport interchange along with a bus station and two Thames Clipper river taxi stops. There has also been a serious proposal to erect a bridge from Rotherhithe across the river to Canary Wharf in the near future.
