Is India Exporting Its Governance Tech Model?

India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, or DPI, is emerging as one of the most influential governance innovations of the modern era. Built through platforms such as Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker and the India Stack, this digital backbone has transformed how public services are delivered at population scale. What sets India apart is its open, interoperable, public-good architecture, which allows governments and private innovators to build on common digital rails at low cost. As UPI processes billions of transactions each month and digital identity enables seamless service delivery, global interest in India’s model is accelerating. Countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East are exploring India-inspired digital ID systems, real-time payments and document digitisation frameworks. For India, exporting DPI is not just about technology, but about shaping global digital governance norms, strengthening geopolitical influence, and creating new opportunities for Indian tech firms. Challenges around data privacy, cybersecurity and local adaptation remain, but if handled carefully, India’s DPI could become a global benchmark for inclusive, efficient and scalable digital governance.
