How to teach online with a document camera. Featuring Joyusing V508

For online teaching I wouldn't be without a document camera.
They're the best tool for modelling.
Many teachers agree that modelling is one of the most fundamental aspects of great teaching and they agree that modelling is something which little is lost in teaching remotely.

Benefits of seeing you use the tools. This is especially useful for younger learners who maybe aren't as used to the correct way to use certain tools, like calculators, or geometry equipment. It's also amazingly useful if you have a demo to show, or an artefact that you want to discuss. Or simply if you have printed documents.
I'd also recommend it as the best way to teach online if you are less confident technically

It's the thing I wouldn't be without, more so than a pen display or drawing tablet, not that these aren't amazingly useful, more on the comparison in an upcoming video, but that these necessarily have some difference between the way you are teaching and the way that the students are learning. Assuming they are still using pencil and paper themselves. Modelling doing something in the same way gives a more direct link between you explaining on their screen and them coding the information in their brains.

All you need is a USB document camera. This is the JoyUsing v508, and I recommend getting a visualiser with versitiliy, so that you can make better use of it in the classroom... when we finally get back there that it! See my full review here:
But JoyUsing also have others in the v500 series which are USB only and you can save a few pounds there and still get the brilliant fill light option.
Let me know if you'd like a buying guide comparing different sorts of visualisers or document cameras and what to look for.

Remeber to make sure that students can full screen your camera feed. You wouldn't want them to be squinting at what you are doing if you are showing your visualizer in gallery view as the normal webcam! You can get around that bybusing share screen, or share window, or just look for whatever your meeting software recommend for presenting full screen camera to the class. I like using a screen, because I know my class are looking at whatever is on that display. And remember that your students might be watching in a window on a smaller screen than yours so make sure you have everything printed nice and big. I'm all about connections so make sure you ask them if they can read everything and hear you nice and loud and clear!

and consider using something like OBS virtual camera to leave your webcam in the feed. If you need something more intuitive then perhaps try manycam which can allow you greater control over what you are presenting, for example switching between browser, PowerPoint or visualiser seemlessly. Rather than relying on whatever streaming service to lay out your webcam and your presentation in a useful and accessable way for your students. Let me know if you want a video on how to set up OBS for online learing.
