Meat Care: Field Strip Ptarmigan & Grouse To Prevent Spoilage (Ptarmigan Hunt Interior Alaska)

Don't Forget to like and subscribe!

This video is a simple DIY for any new grouse hunter. If you get birds in the morning but plan on being out all day, make sure you get the stuff out that can go bad.

If you are trying to keep hunting, the easiest way to clean these animals is to leave the feathers on and finish them when you get home. It's as easy as 1-2-3:

1. Remove the head
2. pull feathers from between the butt and bottom of breast meat
3. Tear skin (there will be 2 layers)
4. Use 2 fingers, inserting them while following the breast plate until you feel the heart (it is about the size of a strawberry)
5. Pull down. Most of the innards will come right out.
6. Double check to make sure you got the whole butt out
7. Set aside salvageable meat that isn't attached (heart, liver, gizzard etc)

ALWAYS remember to know the hunting regulations in your area. Salvage requirements can change, even between hunting areas in a single state.

Also

ALWAYS remember to pack enough safety gear for your trip. Prepare for the worst, have an emergency plan, and someone in town who knows where you are and when you will return.

Sorry about the audio on this one. I decided to dub audio back in so you could understand what's going on. We were out on a caribou hunt and happened to stumble into these birds, so we decided to field dress them as we got them in the morning.

You can find some video of my wife harvesting these birds a few videos back. It's titled "The Ptarmigan & The Wife".

You can check her out on IG @waresbymaegan and on Etsy under the same name.
