Departing from Coonoor

The Nilagiri Passenger, after a change of power from a Swiss steam engine to a bio diesel YDM-4 #6664 engine on arrival at Coonoor from Mettupalayam; is seen departing for Ootacamund (Udagamandalam) on August 2, 2012. Note the flag signalling by brakesmen on the carriage verandahs, not seen elsewhere in India and not observed by the travelling public on this route.

A Swiss steam engine pushed this train uphill on the steep rack section of the scenic metre gauge Nilgiri Mountain Railway up to Coonoor, and a YDM-4 diesel locomotive replaced it for the non rack route on a mild gradient to Ooty. This mainline diesel locomotive is among the few brought to Coonoor loco shed from the plains, as they were rendered redundant after conversion of metre gauge lines to broad gauge (5' 6") on most of the railway network in India.

V.M.Govind Krishnan's book: "NMR [Nilgiri Mountain Railway]-From Lifeline to Oblivion", now available in its Revised Edition documents the efforts of the public to thwart the moves of the Indian government to dismantle this unique rack railway, now in its 113th year; and to keep this engineering marvel in running condition. NMR is the only metre gauge rack railway in Asia.
