In our last class, we had covered the events of menstrual cycle that occur from 1 to 28 days. After studying the concepts of hormonal roles and formation of gametes, now we are moving on to our next topic - Fertilisation and Implantation.
What is Fertilisation?
- The process of formation of a sperm with an ovum is called fertilisation.
During fertilization, a sperm comes in contact with the zona pellucida layer of the ovum and induces changes in the membrane that block the entry of additional sperms. Thus, it ensures that only one sperm can fertilize an ovum.
Now we need to understand that fertilization can only occur if the ovum and sperms are transported simultaneously to the ampullary region. This is the why not all copulation lead to fertilization and pregnancy.
After fertilization of gametes a diploid zygote forms. Now divisions start while the zygote is still into oviduct. When zygote reaches to some cells stage it has top be implanted to the uterus. So that, further embryonic development can occur easily.
What is Implantation?
- The process in which the embryo attaches with the endometrium of uterus, is called implantation.
Before reaching the implantation stage, the zygote goes through many divisions achieving different stages like 8 celled stage (morula), 16 celled stage, blastocyst stage.
Finally when zygote reaches to the blastocyst stage it is embedded in the endometrium of the uterus (implantation) and further development initiates.
