The term "toddle" is defined as a stumbling, uneasy way of walking, much like an infant. In the late teen years of the 20th Century there was a dance called the toddle which dancers, and even dance master Arthur Murray delighted in. One of the earliest references I can find to toddle is "Toddling the Todalo" which was sung around 1911. Ten years later with Prohibition the law of the land for about 2 years, this song "Toddle" was performed. A year later saw the tune "Chicago, that Toddling Town" describing the pervasive effects of bootlegging going on there.

Is it a coincidence that The Benson Orchestra of Chicago picked up on this tune? Maybe. It was definitely a small dance craze at that time. Enjoy this crazy record from 1921 which features an unusual drum solo 2/3rds of the way through the record.
