Certified Payroll: The Problem Hiding Every Contractor's Cash

Certified payroll is one of the most consequential compliance requirements in construction and one of the most manual, broken workflows in the industry. Coray Grove, founder of WagePath, spent decades in payroll and HCM watching it not get solved. Now he's fixing it.

In this episode of Work Tech Weekly, Steve Smith sits down with Coray to talk about what it actually takes to automate prevailing wage calculations and certified payroll reporting for the trades. Coray built his first version of this product in 2018 for a single client in Oregon. He just built WagePath, a far more sophisticated platform, in nine months.

They get into why contractors are leaving real money on the table with fringe benefit offsets, why some companies are three months behind on payments because they can't file the reports, and why this might be the best moment in history to build a niche software company.

📌 Topics covered:
- What certified payroll actually requires and why it's so hard to get right
- The fringe offset math that lets contractors bid on work they couldn't touch before
- Why WagePath is connective tissue for the HCM ecosystem, not a system of record
- How AI helped Coray build in 9 months what would've taken 3 years
- What it's like to be a second-time founder with a niche, must-have product
