The Strange Glow That Led to One of History’s Biggest Discoveries

A physics professor noticed a glow that shouldn't have existed, and it changed medicine forever 🔬... here's what they don't tell you.

In late 1895, Wilhelm Röntgen was running current through a vacuum tube in his dark lab in Würzburg, Germany. The tube was wrapped in black cardboard, but a fluorescent screen across the room lit up green. Something was passing straight through the cover. He stayed in that lab for weeks, aiming these mystery rays at wood, books, and metal. He called them X-rays because he had no clue what they were. Then he asked his wife Bertha to put her hand on a photographic plate. The image showed her bones and wedding ring. Nothing else. She said, 'I have seen my death.' Within months, doctors everywhere were using X-rays. Röntgen won the first ever Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901 and refused to patent it.
