Tiger Snake Catching Frogs

This is typical Tiger Snake hunting behaviour. They wander around tasting the air and then probe into nooks and crannies looking for prey. A sudden darting movement indicates that they've struck at something; and then if successful they pull their heads back out into the open with their prey in their mouths.

Ponds and billabongs dry out at this time of year, creating large areas of dry land that frogs find attractive. Tiger Snakes take advantage of this situation and become very active hunters.

The frog is a Striped Marsh Frog (Limnodynastes Peronii).

Filmed 2 February 2014 in Suburban Melbourne, Australia.
