An Eastern Brown Snake's Journey
Although highly venomous and potentially deadly, Eastern Brown Snakes are extremely shy animals and usually hide instantly when a human appears. So being able to follow this one around for about an hour was a special experience!
They mate in Spring, so most likely this was a male seeking females. Over the hour I followed him he travelled quite a long distance, perhaps one or two hundred metres.
A couple of times in the video the distinctive defensive posture of this species can be seen, with the head raised high off the ground and the neck bent into a tight S-shape. As seen in the video this posture allows Eastern Brown Snakes to advance forwards while being ready to instantly strike. But as with most snake species, biting is a last resort.
Filmed 4 October 2017 in Melbourne, Australia.
