Sunday 3rd of May, 2026 — Daily Forecast Australia with Lisa.

Please note there will be no forecast tomorrow, Monday.

Today's forecast carries some serious weather headlines. A deep and well-organised low pressure system sitting south of the country is driving widespread gale and marine wind warnings across multiple states, with the strongest impacts focused along southern and southeastern coastal waters. At the same time, a band of rain and embedded thunderstorms is tracking from South Australia through western New South Wales and into Victoria, with some cells capable of producing damaging winds and large hail through the afternoon.

The wind gust picture across the south is significant today. Adelaide is seeing gusts around 66 km/h, Mount Gambier 63, Melbourne 55, Mallacoota 53 and Whyalla 50, with strong to damaging gusts also expected across inland Victoria through Marysville, Woods Point and the alpine regions around Mount Hotham and Falls Creek, where gusts could frequently exceed 80 km/h this afternoon. Along the far south coast of New South Wales, Eden and Cape Howe will also see strong and gusty conditions. If you are near the water anywhere along the southern coastline today, please exercise extreme caution.

Tasmania is a significant part of today's story, with heavy rainfall across the northwest including Burnie, Smithton and Launceston driven by the low's circulation wrapping moisture in from the southwest, alongside elevated winds at higher elevations.

Looking ahead into early Monday morning, the most intense rainfall in this event is expected to concentrate through the Snowy Mountains foothills and the NSW-Victoria border region, with Holbrook, Tallangatta, Corryong, Glen Valley and Dartmouth all sitting within the heaviest rainfall zone. Please stay across Bureau of Meteorology updates if you are in any of these areas.
The three-day outlook shows a promising rainfall signal for parts of drought-affected New South Wales and Victoria, with the highest accumulations expected through western New South Wales and the Victorian Highlands. Unfortunately, severely drought-affected areas including Tamworth, Bulahdelah and Fingal in Tasmania are not expected to see the relief they need from this system.
