The new Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) which was introduced by Raksha Mantri, Rajnath Singh, in September 2020 gave India’s forces the option to lease military equipment. Platforms like transport fleet, trainers, simulators and machinery needed for search and rescue missions got the nod. The armed forces especially the IAF and Indian Navy which are struggling with budgetary constraints and operational gaps jumped at the opportunity. But, is leasing military equipment cost-effective and can the new policy boost India’s military preparedness? Shreya Dhoundial explains.
