How to build LEGO tank suspensions

Another requested video. Building some satisfying LEGO suspension for tracked vehicles can be a challenge. That is why I made this video to give you some inspiration and help you get started. In this video I will talk a little about the history of tanks, about different kinds of suspensions for tanks, how they function and how to build them with LEGO. This video is mainly meant for people who are new to building tracked LEGO vehicles.

I am focusing on Tank suspensions simple because that is what I have build so far. First a bit of history. As you may know the first tanks were build for the Western Front during the First World War (1914-1918) to force a breakthrough. The first tanks like the Mark I, Renault FT and the Saint-Chamond, had no or very limited suspension. At most they used fairly ineffectual coil spring or leaf spring suspension between the chassis and the tracks. The coil spring suspension was mostly placed inside the tracks, which meant they needed to be small and thus did not have a lot of travel. This meant that they offered only a small amount of dampening. Fortunately that was not a huge problem because the first tanks were quite slow, most of them didn't exceed 5 miles per hour.
Because TLG doesn't produce small squat coil springs, it's is difficult to recreate this rather ineffectual type of suspension in LEGO. During the interwar period tank development continued, tanks became faster which increased the need for more effective suspension systems. Three types predominated during the Second World War. Namely the bogie suspension, the Christie suspension and the torsion-bar suspension.
