They Thought It Would Burn For Days

In 1971, Soviet geologists made a catastrophic mistake while drilling for natural gas in Turkmenistan's Karakum Desert. The ground collapsed, creating a massive crater that released deadly methane gas. To prevent a disaster, they set it on fire, expecting it to burn out in a few days.

53 years later, it's STILL BURNING.

Known as the Darvaza Gas Crater or "The Door to Hell," this 70-meter-wide inferno has become one of Earth's most bizarre phenomena. The flames light up the desert night, fueled by seemingly endless underground gas reserves.

But in 2025, scientists noticed something alarming - the flames are finally dying down. And that might actually be WORSE for our planet than keeping it burning.
