Central America’s Seismic Trigger Zone

New analysis shows the region sits on multiple colliding tectonic plates that store energy and release it without warning. Guatemala City, San Salvador, Managua, and San José are positioned directly above the strongest shaking zones. One major rupture in Guatemala has the potential to cause more than eleven thousand deaths.

This setup is severe. Subduction earthquakes offshore and shallow crustal faults on land overlap across the same areas where millions of people live. The region is configured for powerful seismic events that strike population centers with little time to react.
