French def min: dead soldiers in Mali are heroes

(26 Nov 2019) French defence minister Florence Parly on Tuesday hailed as "heroes" the 13 French officers who died when two helicopters collided in midair during an operation against Islamic extremists in Mali.
She said the two helicopters crashed as they were providing air support to French ground troops as they were engaging extremists in combat in Mali's Liptako region.
The aircraft had been flying very low in pitch-black conditions, Parly said. No one on board survived.
It was the biggest loss of life for the French military since its mission in West Africa’s Sahel region began in 2013.
The 13 officers were part of Operation Barkhane which supports G5 Sahel countries in the fight against extremists.
France’s operation in West and Central Africa is its largest overseas military mission and involves 4,500 personnel.
