Common dermatomal distributions of acute herpes zoster

Dermatomal pattern and vesicular rash are hallmarks of acute herpes zoster

Higher incidence in elderly (80+) as immunity becomes depressed

Affected nerves from most to least common:
Thoracic spinal roots
Ophthalmic division of trigeminal nerve (V1)
Maxillary division of trigeminal nerve (V2)
Cervical spinal roots
Sacral spinal roots
