Hainan Island Incident in 2001 US and Chinese views

On 1 April 2001, a mid-air collision between a United States Navy EP-3E ARIES II signals intelligence aircraft and a People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) J-8II interceptor fighter jet resulted in an international dispute between the United States of America and the People's Republic of China, called the Hainan Island incident.

During the incident, 1 Chinese J-8 figter jet was destroyed, its pilot Lt. Cdr. Wang Wei killed and 24 U.S. aircrew were captured and detained until April 11, 2001.
