Issues and Opportunities in Last Mile Logistics

An overview of research being conducted by Dr. Martin Savelsbergh, James C. Edenfield Chair and Professor and Co-Director Supply Chain & Logistics Institute, and Dr. Alan Erera, Associate Chair for Graduate Studies and Coca-Cola Professor with Georgia Tech.

The exponential growth of eCommerce has made it even more critical for organizations to manage profitability alongside an increasing demand from individual consumers to receive product within days using non-traditional delivery methods. In the session, the professors discuss modern last mile logistics (LML) and the changing landscape and complexities that drive research into different approaches and methodologies. some of the basics of LML organization and optimization as well as recent advancements and approaches to same-day and urban delivery are covered.

Dr. Savelsbergh's research involves creating innovative techniques for solving large-scale optimization problems in a variety of areas, ranging from supply chain master planning and execution, to world-wide tank container management, to service network design, to production planning, and to vehicle routing and scheduling.

Dr. Erera's research interests focus on transportation and logistics systems planning and control, with an emphasis on planning under uncertainty and real-time operational control. His recent work has addressed dynamic vehicle routing systems for same-day distribution; resilient logistics network design for food supply chains; service network design, linehaul equipment management, and driver scheduling for consolidation freight carriers; robust container fleet management for global shipping companies; and robust and flexible vehicle routing system planning and control for distribution companies.
