We’re still all stuck at home and I’m still working on fun licks for you guys to practice. In today’s lockdown lick we’re learning a twangy, open-string country lick in the key of E. This is the sort of thing you could expect to hear from players like Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, Albert Lee, Brent Mason… the list goes on!

The main takeaway from this lick, is the combination of 3rd’s from the E major pentatonic and the E blues scale. The blues scale has a flat 3rd and the major pentatonic has a major 3rd. Listen to any pro country or blues player and you’ll find that they often combine major pentatonic and minor pentatonic/blues scale based licks when improvising over I IV V progressions.

As mentioned in the first lockdown lick video, this combination of pentatonic scales is very similar to the scale formula for the mixolydian mode. If you want to know more about mixolydian and its relationship to pentatonic scales, check out this free video:
