Natural Dyeing with Pomegranate Skins
DYEING FABRIC WITH POMEGRANATE 🌼
I hope you enjoy watching the process of some natural dyeing I did using pomegranate skins. I was so happy with how the beautiful buttery yellow colour turned out on my hemp socks.
I have been dabbling in natural dyes for a few years now - I am by no measure an expert but love experimenting and have picked up lots of helpful tips along the way. Mostly from my natural dyer friend, Lara and also some dye books.
Pomegranates are a great natural dye not only because they are easy to source but because like avocado seeds, they are rich in tannin. This means that they make a colourfast dye. They also react well to mordants which can change the colour to create bright yellows or mossy green/greys. Another effective brightener is to add some turmeric to the dye pot if you’re after a bright yellow.
Everyone has a slightly different style but mostly natural dyeing is about experimenting and enjoying the process. Dyeing fabric naturally is an ancient practice and learning about its history is so fascinating.

The books I own and often reference are Wild Colour by Jenny Dean and Botanical colour at your fingertips by Rebecca Desnos.
Thank you for watching and take care 🌿
