Can We Trust Art Supply Reviews Anymore?

I have been noticing that the quality of art supplies being sold today is not as good as it used to be. When I mentioned this I heard from several viewers that they found the same thing to be true. What's going on? And how can you avoid getting a lemon?

Tips for avoiding a lemon:
Check your product as soon as you get it. Make sure it is what you ordered. Swatch it out. Compare it with previous versions. Make sure the pigment number matches and make sure it will suit your needs. Sometimes companies have to replace an ingredient with an equivalent quality one and that is to be understood as long as the quality is the same and it will work for you. If it won't then you want to be able to return it before it is too late. In the case of the LUKAS cobalt Turquoise, I contacted Jerry Artarama and they issued me a refund for the tube. Had I stashed the tube in my drawer I wouldn't have known about the issue until it was too late.

Before ordering look for the most recent reviews on a companies website. This is especially useful when shopping on Amazon for budget brands as these products are produced overseas in factories and the seller may have little say over what is in the product should the factory change an ingredient or may be forced to switch factories if prices change or they shut down resulting in the consumer getting a different product than the reviewer got. This has happened to products I have reviewed and it breaks my heart to see people water their money on a product I recommended if the seller changed it. Always look at the most recent reviews on Amazon. Leave reviews too if you have a minute because that will help the whole art ecosystem.

Beware of different sizes from the same brand. There have been times where I have tried different-sized watercolor sets from the same brand only to find entirely different quality paint. also, you will find the same paint being sold by different companies so it's easy to buy duplicates if you are curious to try several brands.

Another problem is that there has been a "race to the bottom" in the industry over the last 5 years or so. all of the art companies are trying to compete with Amazon's prices and often quality is sacrificed. We need to be vigilant to make sure we get what we pay for because the tube of watercolor we bought 5 years ago might not be the same as the one we are paying more for today.
