Let's Visit the Portland Japanese Garden

Nestled in the steep, wooded hillsides of Portland Oregon's Washington Park, the Portland Japanese Garden encompasses 12 acres of trickling streams and meandering walkways, shaded with immaculately tended ornamental trees and flowering plants.

Designed in 1963 by Japanese landscape master Takuma Tono, the Portland Japanese Garden consists of five principle gardens, influenced by Shinto, Buddhist, and Taoist philosophies: the Strolling Pond Garden, the Tea Garden, the Natural garden, the Sand and Stone Garden, and the Flat Garden, with a pavilion gallery for exhibitions and special events. A cultural village and three new garden spaces were added in 2017, designed by architect Kengo Kuma.

Recorded in May, 2017.
