Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa in 4K: Japan's Best of the Best 🌷兼六園 金沢市 🌷 Japan As It Truly Is

Kenrokuen has been called Japan's most beautiful historical traditional garden and for good reason. Come discover why here.

Kenrokuen has a history going back to 1620 and was gradually developed into what you can now see here. It is about 11.44 hectares big and contains about 8750 trees. The most famous part of the garden is the dual-legged Kotoji Toro stone lantern next to the large Kasumi Pond. You can also see the oldest fountain in Japan which is powered naturally, the tea house, built in 1725, a rest house, several waterfalls, and the Flying Geese Bridge (Ganko-bashi). The garden was virtually wiped out by a massive fire in 1759 but was painstakingly rebuilt.
There is also a famous haiku by one of Japan's biggest poets, Matsuo Basho, who was in Kanazawa in 1659. In English:

The blazing sun
Pretending not to know the season
Autumn wind

The garden was carefully designed and built to show the 6 attributes of a perfect landscape: spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, waterways, and panoramas.

Of the Top 3 landscape gardens in Japan, Kenrokuen is by far at the top of the list. Missing this beautiful garden in Kanazawa would be a terrible mistake. The other gardens, Korakuen in Okayama City and Kairakuen in Mito, Ibaraki are all worth your attention, but if you had to pick one, Kenrokuen wins it easily.
