Amaizing Events Episode 47 | Hidden Truth of Lat, Uzza & Manat | عرب میں بت پرستی کی پوشیدہ تاریخ
السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
Before Islam, the people of Arabia worshipped many idols and false gods alongside Allah. Among the most famous idols were Lat and Uzza, which were highly respected by the Arab tribes, especially the Quraysh of Makkah. These idols became symbols of shirk and paganism in pre-Islamic Arabia. The hidden history of Lat and Uzza reveals how idol worship slowly spread among the descendants of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام after they abandoned pure monotheism. Islam later came to destroy these false beliefs and restore the worship of one Allah alone.
Originally, the Arabs followed the religion of Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail عليه السلام. They believed in Allah and respected the Kaaba as the center of worship. However, over time, ignorance and superstition spread among the people. One of the main individuals responsible for introducing idol worship into Arabia was Amr ibn Luhayy, the chief of the tribe of Khuza‘ah. Historical narrations mention that he traveled to Syria and saw people worshipping idols there. He became impressed by their customs and brought idols back to Makkah. He encouraged the Arabs to worship them, sacrifice animals for them, and seek blessings from them.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strongly condemned Amr ibn Luhayy because he changed the religion of Ibrahim عليه السلام. In Sahih al-Bukhari, the Prophet ﷺ said he saw Amr ibn Luhayy dragging his intestines in Hellfire because he was the first to alter the religion and introduce idol worship into Arabia. This shows how dangerous it is to spread false beliefs and lead people away from Allah’s guidance.
Lat was one of the most famous idols worshipped in the city of Ta’if by the tribe of Thaqif. Some historians mention that Lat may have originally been connected to a righteous man who used to serve pilgrims. After his death, people exaggerated respect for him until his grave eventually became an idol of worship. Over generations, the people forgot the difference between respect and worship. Allah mentions Lat directly in the Quran: “Have you considered Al-Lat and Al-‘Uzza?” (Surah An-Najm 53:19).
The idol of Uzza was worshipped near Makkah and was especially honored by the Quraysh. Uzza was associated with sacred trees and was believed by the pagans to bring victory, protection, and blessings. Before battles, many Arabs would pray to Uzza for help. During the Battle of Uhud, Abu Sufyan proudly shouted to the Muslims: “We have Uzza while you have no Uzza.” The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instructed the believers to respond: “Allah is our Protector, and you have no protector.” Sahih al-Bukhari This incident clearly showed the difference between Tawheed and idol worship.
The Arabs also worshipped another idol called Manat, which was honored near the area of Madinah. Together, Lat, Uzza, and Manat became the three greatest idols of Arabia. Allah exposed the falsehood of these idols in Surah An-Najm: “And have you seen Lat and Uzza and Manat, the third—the other one?” (Surah An-Najm 53:19-20). These verses challenged the beliefs of the pagans and reminded them that idols could neither create, help, nor protect anyone.
One important lesson from this history is how slowly shirk enters societies. People often begin with admiration or respect for righteous individuals, but Shaytan gradually misguides them toward worship and superstition. The Quran warns against blindly following traditions without knowledge. Allah says: “And when it is said to them, ‘Follow what Allah has revealed,’ they say, ‘Rather, we follow what we found our fathers doing’” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:170).
When Islam spread across Arabia, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ purified the Kaaba from idols after the conquest of Makkah. He ordered the destruction of Lat, Uzza, and other idols. Khalid ibn al-Walid was sent to destroy Uzza, while other companions destroyed Lat and Manat. This marked the end of major idol worship in Arabia and the victory of Tawheed.
The story of Lat and Uzza teaches Muslims to worship Allah alone without partners or intermediaries. It reminds believers that traditions and customs should never replace divine guidance. True honor and success come only through faith in Allah and obedience to His commands.
