Welcome to Episode 25 of our series “Prophets and Their Nations” on Tarikh-e-Islam. In this episode, we continue the story of Hazrat Adam (AS) and his two sons, Qabeel (Cain) and Habeel (Abel), focusing on the first murder in human history and the lessons it teaches for all generations.
According to Islamic traditions, jealousy and arrogance led Qabeel to develop hatred toward his brother Habeel. After Allah accepted Habeel’s sacrifice and rejected Qabeel’s offering, Qabeel became consumed by envy. Since no murder had ever occurred before in the world, Qabeel did not know how to kill. The narrations mention that he observed an animal being killed by smashing its head between stones, and from this he learned a method of murder.
One day, while Habeel was resting under a tree, Qabeel attacked him with a heavy stone and killed him. Thus, the first act of murder took place on Earth. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that every unjust killing committed thereafter carries a share of responsibility upon the first son of Adam who introduced this crime among humanity. This powerful teaching reminds us that those who initiate evil practices bear the burden of their own sins as well as a share of the sins of those who follow them.
The episode also explains an important Islamic principle: just as a person who introduces evil bears responsibility for its consequences, the one who establishes a good practice receives reward for everyone who follows it. Islamic history contains many examples of righteous leaders who introduced beneficial practices that continued to bring reward long after their deaths.
