Anthony Phillips Looks Back at Mike Rutherford's Smallcreeps Day

Anthony Phillips Looks Back at Mike Rutherford's Smallcreeps Day & Simon Phillips
The reaction to longtime Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford's first solo album “Smallcreeps Day” is sometimes very mixed. Released on Feb. 15, 1980 it came after Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks first solo outing “It's a Curious Feeling” from October 8, 1979 but before Phil Collins first album “Face Value” which debuted on February 13th 1981.

“Smallcreeps Day” remains one of my all time favorite albums. In fact it's my favorite Prog album of all time. As much as I loved Genesis nothing moved me more than “Smallcreeps Day”

Rutherford brought in vocalist Noel McCalla, Morris Pert on percussion drummer Simon Phillips and Anthony Phillips on keys. Anthony was, of course, in Genesis with Mike Rutherford for their first two albums and the two have remained friends. I asked Anthony about the album and quickly we started talking about that drummer.

Phillips has just released a remastered 2-disc deluxe edition of his album “Invisible Men” that was originally released in the U.S. in 1983 and 84 in the U.K. It was a departure for the guitarist since, for the most part, It was a pop project. Something he had mixed feelings about releasing. - by John Beaudin
