TALLINN’S Historic MARKET SQUARE | Tour of the LOWER TOWN 🇪🇪

My walking tour of Tallinn’s historic old town continues with a look around the beautiful lower quarter including Town Hall Square, the 14th century Pikk Jalg & the iconic St Olaf's Church.

The mediaeval old town of Tallinn is something quite special, with a historic city plan and hundreds of well-preserved buildings it is one of the most complete mediaeval cities in Northern Europe. I was really excited to get out and explore it!

Colourful buildings, gigantic stone churches and old cobbled streets are in abundance and confined within an old defensive wall that in itself is a popular tourist site. We started on a narrow street called Pikk Jalg that seems to connect the upper town with the lower. It’s lined with 14th century buildings and leads to Long Leg Gate Tower (Pika Jala Väravatorn) which is where I entered Tallinn’s old town.

I spent some time enjoying the atmosphere and sights at Town Hall Square (Raekoja Plats) as the walking tour paused to provide details on the many striking buildings that surround the market place. Out of all of them though it’s Tallinn Town Hall (Tallinna Raekoda) that dominates the area - its beautiful architecture and vibrant colours make it a joy to visit and a sight to behold.

From there I walked to St Olaf's Church (Oleviste Kogudus) where I took a look inside and climbed to the bell tower for some epic views across the city of Tallinn. The historic Old Town, Toompea Hill and Baltic Sea were all visible. Afterwards I headed back to Town Hall Square to see the UNESCO World Heritage Site lit up in the dark - it was a sight to behold!
