What’s under Fiumicino Airport in Rome - the ancient history most passengers miss!
Fiumicino Airport in Rome is near the mouth of the River Tiber on the site of the ancient Roman port. The harbour basin of portus is practically at the end of the runway and clearly visible as you come into land. If you know where to look, there are numerous Roman remains in the area including buildings, mosaics, tombs, Roman ships, roads and perhaps a lighthouse. This area is little visited by tourists even though it is literally just outside the airport and can easily be combined with a visit to Ostia Antica. Find out more about this fascinating aspect of Roman history.
