2024 Hyundai Tucson - Interior and Exterior Walkaround

The 2023 Hyundai Tucson boasts a cutting-edge design that sets it apart from its more conservative compact SUV competitors. However, this distinctive style doesn't come at the expense of practicality or affordability; the Tucson excels in both areas. Hyundai has taken a comprehensive approach with the Tucson, offering a wide range of trims and powertrains, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, which we'll discuss separately, making it an appealing choice for a broad spectrum of buyers.

The base powertrain features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, while the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models employ a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine coupled with an electric motor, resulting in a livelier performance. Even the entry-level Tucson models come well-equipped, and as you move up the trim levels, the Tucson transitions from being a mainstream SUV to a more premium offering. This shift gives it a competitive edge over rivals like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

The Hyundai Tucson, which underwent a complete redesign in 2022, experiences only a few minor changes in its packaging. Notably, the Premium package is no longer available for the SEL model, as its components have been integrated as standard features in other trim levels. For instance, the N-Line trim now includes a panoramic sunroof as standard, and all XRT trims and higher now come equipped with a larger 10.3-inch infotainment screen. Furthermore, features like adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and a speed limit assist are now included as standard across all Tucson trims.

We recommend considering the SEL Convenience trim, as it strikes an excellent balance between features and cost. This trim level includes heated front seats, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, a sunroof, and a 10.3-inch digital gauge display, along with other desirable features. Additionally, the lineup now includes a sporty N Line model and a rugged XRT model for those seeking a different style. However, it's important to note that if you're looking for a high-performance turbocharged four-cylinder engine, both the N Line and XRT models primarily offer appearance enhancements and don't provide a significant boost in performance.

The standard engine for the Tucson is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, delivering 187 horsepower. It comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and is available with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options. The Tucson provides sufficient power for everyday city driving and highway passing situations, though those with a heavy foot may desire more power. In our testing, the all-wheel-drive Limited model reached 60 mph in 8.8 seconds.

For a bit more acceleration, the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models are available, although they don't reach the same level of speed as a Toyota RAV4 Prime. While the Tucson isn't a sports car, it exhibits confident handling, reasonably crisp steering, and a comfortable ride. What truly stands out about the Tucson's driving experience is its quiet and refined nature when cruising, instilling a sense of luxury that's not commonly found in this class of SUVs.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
According to EPA estimates, the 2024 Tucson is expected to achieve a maximum of 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive. In our own test on a 75-mph highway route, a Tucson XRT delivered a less-than-impressive 26 mpg. For more detailed information about the Tucson's fuel economy, you can refer to the EPA's official website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Tucson features a modern yet straightforward dashboard design, including a digital gauge display, a push-button shifter, and a touch-sensitive control panel for the climate-control system and infotainment. Hyundai's flagship Palisade SUV and the brand's recently redesigned Sonata and Elantra sedans have marked a significant milestone in the company's interior design evolution. The new Tucson continues this trend with an interior that is thoughtfully arranged, offering high-quality materials and luxury features.

Compared to the outgoing model, the Tucson provides more rear seat space and a larger cargo area, enhancing passenger comfort and practicality. In our testing, the hybrid Tucson showcased its versatility, accommodating nine carry-on suitcases behind the back row, and the luggage capacity expanded to 22 bags with the seatbacks folded down.
