At the beginning of the 19th century, Friedrich Joseph Haass, a young German physician, was invited by Princess Repnina to come to Russia. Soon he gained fame, respect, and money and became one of the most visible and wealthy physicians in Moscow.

Appointed as the Head Doctor of Moscow's prisons and a member of the Warden's Prisons Committee, he was shocked when he saw how prisoners lived. So he dedicated his life to alleviating the suffering of prisoners. When Haass died, he left no money of his own, as he had given it all away to the poor. "Hurry on to do good things!" was his motto.

The film depicts in a benign and pleasing way, the reality of this 'Holy Doctor', who gave up all his belongings in order to accomplish his mission. A skilled combination of location shots, drawings, and fiction scenes, together with valuable interview material and music, composed especially for this occasion, draw the spectator into the 19th century Moscow world, following the Holy Doctor in his daily work and hardships.
