Christmas or Christmas Day (Old English: Crīstesmæsse, meaning "Christ's Mass") is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ,[6][7] observed most commonly on December 25[4][8][9] as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world.[2][10][11] A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it is prepared for by the season of Advent or Nativity Fast and is prolonged by the Octave of Christmas and further by the season of Christmastide. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, more commonly known as Mount Mary Church, is a Roman Catholic Basilica located in Bandra, Mumbai. The feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated here on the first Sunday after 8 September, the birthday of the Virgin Mary. The feast is followed by a week long celebration known locally as the Bandra Fair and is visited by thousands of people.
Mount Mary's holds the most popular midnight mass in Bandra -- and it is a midnight one, getting underway with carols at 11.30 p.m., as it's held indoors. As the name suggests, the church sits atop a small hill overlooking the ocean, close to Bandra Bandstand. Its current building is around 100 years old, although its statue of the mother Mary dates back to the 16th century.
