Ballybofey Postcard Museum - Donegal 1983

An exhibition of vintage postcards is being enjoyed by customers at the post office in Ballybofey.

It can be said that most post offices throughout Ireland are rather drab and functional buildings, but the twin towns of Ballybofey and Stranorlar in County Donegal are served by one which is an exception to the rule.

Postmaster Paddy Bonner was asked initially to display some old postcards in the post office. He found that not only did they brighten up the place, but the level of interest in these images from times past exceeded his expectations,

It’s now a place where you’re inclined to linger.

The exhibition also helps pass the time for older residents queuing to collect their old age pension,

They take enjoyment out of watching the cards.

Paddy Bonner encourages his post office colleagues nationwide to take up similar projects, as all it takes is a few images to start with,

People will give them cards, and their collection over a period will increase.

Broadcast on 16 February 1983. The reporter is Tommie Gorman.
